Meet Corey Katz
Certified Educational Planner
I grew up in Brooklyn, going through the New York City public school system. When the time came to think about college there was no one to turn to. The impact of this did not hit me until years later. After filling out the SUNY forms and deciding upon SUNY Brockport for a degree in journalism, I headed upstate planning to spend the rest of my life writing. Fast forward ten years when the urge to join the helping professions called. Now living on Long Island, I went to LIU Post for a masters degree in School Counseling and stayed for a second degree in Mental Health Counseling. LIU offered me a job as an Academic Counselor, and

eventually I became the Director of this busy department, overseeing the advising process for over 5000 undergraduate students. I enjoyed helping students plan their studies while tackling everything else life threw their way. This ultimately led to my current role, helping high school students prepare for their entry into post-high school life. I could not imagine a more rewarding career.
I love what I do! I found a way to combine my skills in counseling, planning and writing. Navigating the college application process can be tricky. Students and parents should be excited and hopeful, not scared or overwhelmed. Understanding the steps involved, knowing what to expect, and turning dreams into reality is how I can help. With twenty years of experience working in high school and higher education institutions, I can provide the insight needed to help ease this difficult transition. My background in mental health counseling helps me establish rapport with students. Knowing there is someone in their corner makes a world of difference, and I make sure each student feels supported. We will start with a basic overview of the educational landscape and the application process before moving on to a more micro level. Students will gain an understanding of the different types of degrees, majors and careers along with up-to-date testing policies, and together we will create a list of programs and colleges to research further. Using fun and creative brainstorming activities we will work on essays. Continuously reinforcing strong organizational skills and attention to detail will help with application completion and decision-making. My vast referral network comes in handy for those requiring additional assistance. Working together, you will be in a position to make smart educational choices.
We will take one step at a time, and have fun along the way.
